iOff Update

Our intrepid sidekick here at the Conniptions lair has kicked up a bit of dust regarding his recent absence from the front page. Never fear, though, dear readers, for iOff is still doing his part to keep Mr. Nipples' life interesting (This is the peak of entertainment for grad students, by the way). In fact, the very morning that I dragged MaLee, Juniper, and myself to Al's Breakfast, iOff stood up to be counted and delivered a memorable performance for our guest, the Juniper. Memorable in that he chose not to start in the blistering cold. You see, he was just a little concerned that, perhaps because I never wake up that early, he was about to be the victim of grand theft auto. As a natural response, he chose to clam up for 10 minutes. Apparently this turtlish response is a safety feature. And honestly, 10 minutes is probably long enough for me to get him going when he gets stuck on the railroad tracks next time. Probably.

It turns out that there is a systemic flaw with iOff's handshake. It is a little weak. It freezes such that the anti-theft gets activated when you simply try turning the engine over. And now Saturn is out of business. Interesting. For now, though, I'm just hoping it warms up and the problem goes away.

Other than that, he's been his cheery self. Even bathing Saturday morning immediately before 4 more inches of Valentine snow fell and promptly sullied up his freshly shined plastic panels. Poor guy. Can't catch a break.

Parking

Apparently the East Coast has been slammed by snow. Fair enough. But now, it seems that even up here in the Great White North, we have been brought to our knees by the snow. Impressive. Honestly, it doesn't seem that bad to me, but get this: The city has declared a snow emergency in effect from now until... APRIL. That means that, for non-snow emergency streets, nobody will be allowed to park on the even side for the next month and a half. That's craziness.

Thank God I have off-street parking.

Suckers.

Seattle

Before this year, I had never been to Seattle. Now, I have been to Seattle.

Who knows why, exactly? Whatever the motive, a small posse, myself included, ventured west to see what all the stir was about. Since we only had 3 days to check the place out, we made sure we hit all of the classics before venturing out into the "International District," where we saw and ate all manner of creatures that you don't typically find at your local delicatessen. That includes the Pike Place Market:

Here we saw some fish, sampled lots of stuff, and showed off just how supersweet our Minnesota (Honeycrisp, SweeTango) trivia knowledge was for a chatty apple hawker. Also, we made an obligatory First Starbucks pilgrimage:

...and ventured onto the ferry plying the Puget Sound.

Which provided enough time, of course, for these guys to act like idiots.

Yup. I was there. In Seattle.

This is an ice cream sundae. Preposterous.

We even got a chance to cross the Tacoma Narrows, though it was too dark to snag a picture.

All in all, it was a very fun time. Special thanks to all the Blue Demons & Friends for lining up lodging, etc.

Big Al's

Dinkytown, USA is a dinky, dinky place. It has a dinky grocery store, a dinky mall, a dinky pizza shop, a dinky bike shop, a dinky tobacco shop, and even a dinky dome. But the dinkiest dinky dink in Dinkytown is surely Al's Breakfast.

The place has 14 diner stools, is 3 meters wide, and has a very pronounced list that nearly caused 2 sausage links to tumble off of the counter in a retreat to the "kitchen" when I went there for the first time this winter.

This place is awesome. The line usually wraps out the door as people sandwich themselves in behind the stools to get the next available seat. As a result, I've never been able to get in. On a particularly cold and early morning, we were finally able to beat the line and crash Al's. It was close to 90 degrees warmer inside than out. Humidity was near 100%

And the breakfast was good. Really good.

My coffee never dropped below half full and my jacket smelled like bacon for a week.

You should go.

The Bank

This year, the Big Ten opened its first new stadium since 1960 on the East Bank of the University of Minnesota campus. The venue was built to accommodate the Golden Gopher football team, which opened the complex with a win over the Air Force Academy, as well as the band, the hockey team (occasionally), and Olympic soccer (torpedoed along with Chicago's bid). There is seating for 50,805 spectators, expandable to 80,000 in the TCF Bank Stadium. Somewhat surprisingly, it is actually an awesome venue. Too bad the gophers suck just so incredibly hard. Oh, you open the 2010 season with USC in "The Bank?" Good luck with that. Kiffin bait.

Anyway, I was invited to go on a stadium tour to see "nooks of the stadium that will never be seen by the public again!" Instead, I waited in the freezing cold for 45 minutes before they allowed me to come in and see, you guessed it, the Concourse. No, no... half of the Concourse. It was a beautiful little Concourse. Concourse.

Oh, and by pure chance, there happened to be a long line of "outreach" exhibits coincidentally lining said Concourse. Nothing like waiting in line just to be subjected to a bunch of crappy U propaganda. Yeah, I was not pleased.

Anyway, here are some pictures.

That's a big "M"

Everybody is so excited to finally get in!

Nice scoreboard.

Umm... intentionally B/W?

Hee hee

Halloween

So, the holiday season is over. I suppose it is the right time to post the obligatory Halloween pics.

Wait that was almost 4 months ago?

And most of you probably saw them already on the Facebook account that is NOT ACTUALLY ME, BY THE WAY.

Oops. My bad. I've been out of the loop.

Just chillin' by the light rail

Spidey n' Me

Totally a legal shot

The other side

Greetings, followers! Good thing I like avacados. This season served up a heaping plenty.

And that covers the 2009-2010 football season.

I have punched through the other side, ladies and gentlemen. That's right, that paper you've heard me complain about for the past 5 years? It has been published. Go ahead and search for it; it's on the interwebs! Crazily enough, news organizations from the BBC to Discover Magazine to Ars Technica to Science Magazine to Treehugger to a slew of crazy non-English speaking outlets I can't even understand have picked it up and plastered my ish all over their respective walls.

That'll reek for days.

Anyway, if you want to see a layman's peek at what ol' Nipsy has been up to down in his dungeon, hop on the old googler. Treasures await.

And this is what I looked like before I hit "submit" online.

Rawr.
