BAM........

Immediately after the shot rang out, an abrupt change in facial expression befell him. At first I assumed that it was that of fear. Turns out, it was actually mirth. Pretty sure the leafy shoot guzzler laughed at me. Before sauntering away. Sauntering. Not even dignifying the threat with a good trot. I was a little offended. Anyway... spent a lot of time communing with nature 30 feet in the air while the snow fell and the temperature dropped below 8 degrees. Managed to mix in a little socially obligatory nightlife and get only 3.5 hrs of sleep a night for 4 days. It is good to return to you roots.

Polisview

The other day I decided to sneak up on my burg and catch it unawares in the morning hours. I laced up my tennis shoes and threw on a thick hoodie and wandered up and down the shore in the brisk air. Not a bad view, considering it is mere footsteps from my stinking abode. I had grand plans of integrating them into my template, but... aside from the footer pic, didn't quite get to it. Take a looksee.

BlueFin

This summer I went with my Fam to Bluefin Bay (last year). My bro was there.

I talked him into building 2 bridges out of rocks without leaving shore.

Then I arm wrestled him.

Shunk, Power-free

At some point this summer, Shunk the Drunk came to visit. She claims to not understand the nickname.

And she stole our power. Then freaked out about it. Whilst brushing her teeth.

Isn't she adorable??

Oh, then Moose, Switch, and I took a transcontinental irish carbomb. From MN to FL (Or was it PA?) to TX. Intense. Ly delicious.

BONG

Bubbles got married!

And I was there! (No, Doozer, that isn't the $8 tie from Meijer. Oh, wait, yes it is.)

That's right: I rented a car and drove from Minneapolis to Cleveland, OH, dragging a kicking and screaming Yoolrich. A grueling 16 hr journey. One way. It was worth it though, the ceremony/reception was very nice, and it was great to see the happy couple off. They went to Tahiti while the Midwest got smoked by rain. It rained 16 inches in one day in my hometown. The floor of my bedroom was 3 feet below the water level.

So, I must have fed something Yoolrich-incompatible to the Yoolrich I brought along. She might not have been feeling well the next morning. It is purely coincidental that this occurred after we attended the wedding of the son of a booze purveyor. As a result, we broke up the return trip a bit which allowed us to hit the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, see where BQ now plays, and crash in Chicago. Wee!

Congrats to the Bubbly One!

iOFF: Recharged

A fraction of the single charge that the ionized iOFF carries around chipped off this summer: Apparently the driver's side sway bar link went bad and caused a horribly disconcerting rattling sound every time I hit the very slightest bit of road topography. This went on for several months, alarming each and every passenger unfortunate enough to climb aboard. Now, thanks to the extreme generosity of Eleanor Abernanthy's sig/Emma Lee's Cuz, it is back in it's original semi-spunky plastic-ey form. Apparently the metal that they used for the bolts was so bad, he had to literally cut them off with a grinder. High quality. I actually think that it was the garage that was most offended... for a brief period of time it was forced to give up the GTO and house an iOFF. Killer.

CA SEM

Not sure if I've posted this before, but I have a stalker. He works for a company that sells scanning electron microscopes and he calls me ALL THE TIME. At least once a day. My colleagues don't tell me when he calls anymore... because every time they saw me, they'd have to tell me he called again. I made the crucial mistake of letting him have my cell number. REAL bad. I guess he wants me to buy his $65K machine.

So, instead, I went to San Francisco to evaluate another company's SEM... on the U's dime! Guess what kind of rental car had my name on it when I arrived:

I actually started laughing out loud in the ramp. It's CA. They would.

Btw, Avis Preferred Service is 4 shades of awesome.

After checking out the obligatory SF sights and finishing the SEM meeting Friday afternoon, I had until midnight Saturday to chill. I drove up a big hill and saw this (That's Oakland, the Bay, and SF on the other side):

And that is true... this is a picture of what I saw. What I missed was the couple having sex in the car parked immediately next to me. I... noticed that as I was getting back into my car. Yikes. It's CA. They would.

Then I checked out Cal Berkeley. The place was awesome and made me envious... but everybody kept giving me really weird looks the whole time. I even stopped in front of a mirror to make sure I didn't spill something on myself or something. After doing some asking around, I've concluded that the looks were due to the fact that I was wearing a dress shirt and pants. Apparently they are all hippies there? It's CA. They would.

Then I blasted out of the foggy, chilly bay area for grapier pastures... Napa Valley, to be precise. It was, as you'd expect, gorgeous. Tried some wine, walked into a hand hewn tunnel, drove my stealth electric car through some vineyards... quality. And free.

Also, I hit some art shows, walked around Cal Davis, and played Guitar Hero for the first time. I'd recommend checking it out. It's CA. I would.

Oh, and Stalkipants was jealous, wanted me to visit him there, too, and has since thrown several temper tantrums via email. Classic.

35(W) hassles and a bridge ain't one...

Not sure if anyone noticed, but the Midwest is still here. Yup, still here! Right between you guys! Guys! ...Guys? So I found it entertaining to observe the Coasters as they flocked to the heart of it all here in Minneapolis renting rooftops for tens of thousands of dollars, parking in the middle of our most frequented streets, and asking about earthquakes. Seriously, earthquakes? Look at a map, Jack. Not everybody decided to build on a fault line like you did.

In a large city, it is interesting to observe that residents are allowed to be completely anonymous, moving from task to task unnoticed, yet those who do not belong still stick out like sore thumbs. You can't help but notice that a guy just isn't from around here when he flies in on Marine 1, shutting down traffic and surrounding himself with suit-and-ties in the "greenest neighborhood in America."

And the President wasn't the only one who stopped to gawk at the park a block from my house... though I think he was the only person to land a helicopter on it... the Gov was here (he landed a metro bus on it), the Piston's (Yes, Detroit) head coach, and about 243, 859 of their pastey faced buds: I could have easily poked Matt Lauer in the eye with a stick on my way to work. Apparently Katie Couric was chillin' on my friend's roof. They weren't the only ones to blame, though... the outstaters and suburbanites were incredibly obnoxious and prevalent, too.

All of these people came to see what happened that was not supposed to happen. The unbelievable made believable at 6pm on a Wednesday: An 8 lane federal road dropped into the Mississippi 3 blocks from my apartment.

The Mississippi river is well known around the world and holds a special place in the history of the United States. It defined French, Spanish, English, and American frontiers and serves vital shipping interests. Ft. Snelling was built along it to protect against the English from the North and soon drew settlers' attention. Federal law prohibited the settling of the area surrounding the fort, but was amended to allow people to build on the East Bank upstream of the complex. Soon the village of St. Anthony (named after the only substantial waterfall on the entire river nearby) swelled. Later, the West Bank restriction was lifted and Brooklyn was born... and hastily renamed to Minneapolis, which eventually swallowed St. Anthony. The powerful waterfalls picked up from there and drove growth and expansion through shipping and water-powered mills and electricity. The resulting city, just upstream from the state capitol, St. Paul, is cut neatly in half by the Mississippi River, joined, primarily by I-35W. We really miss the bridge.

I took the above pictures a half hr after the bridge fell as I walked home from work... you can see the road to nowhere and smoke billowing from a semi. Below is a rendering of the 10 lane replacement bridge which started construction on the first of this month.

By the way, the street directions here are based on the river banks, not on the cardinal directions... it is scary how many people don't know that...

Blogger: Active

That was some party. Balls. The recovery is nearly complete, however, and the first signs of life are sprouting from the wreckage. First off, thanks to everybody who wished me a happy birthday 4 months ago! I was informed by Google (parent company of Blogger), that the comment traffic was so high to that post that I my blog was officially placed in "Probationary Restriction" mode. I tried resurrecting it a couple times before the disciplinary period had expired, each time generating such high site traffic that they pulled my template. As such, I wish to remind you to be responsible in your perusal: Someone could lose an eye.

Anyway, let's see... the birthday was pretty awesome. We claimed a side room at the largest Irish whiskey purveyor in America and Yoolrich got me this freakin' sweet cake from DQ:

Also, in high school I went on a class trip to Canada and some crazy guy on the street gathered a bunch of us around and tried to sell us "macking" lessons. He was individually quoting each guy with a cost and class duration (ranging from 30 minutes to 24 hrs) of instruction guaranteed to bag the flyest of the fly. When he got around to me, he said:

"You're pretty good with the books, huh?"

"I guess?"

"That's good. Stick with that."

...and moved on. What a jerk.

Kapow!! I'm a pimp! A... corpse pimp?

And someone thought it would be funny to pour water that I bought all over me and down my pants. That's how hot it was.

Kapow.
